This past Saturday, former Dallas Mavericks star Harrison Barnes and Philadelphia Eagles player Malik Jackson paid for the funeral of Atatiana Jefferson.
The death of the late Texas native has raised worldwide hysteria, as she was shot inside of her home—during a wellness check from Fort Worth police.
Harrison Barnes, who now plays for the Sacramento Kings, played three seasons in Dallas and feels very much apart of the community.
“My kwife and I wanted to do something for that family,” Barnes said to reporters in a video posted by NBC Sports. “It was a tragic situation that happened. No one should be killed during a wellness check, but the biggest thing is, anytime someone has to go through that, the last thing they you want to have to worry about is trying to come up with the money for a funeral.”
He explained to that Barnes and his wife are covering more than half of Jefferson’s service — about 90 percent — and Jackson will pay for the remainder.
According to Barnes, he was not only affected by Jefferson’s death but also the Dallas murder of his friend and former NBA player Andre Emmett.
“When you see these situations continue to occur you know that change needs to happen,” Barnes said.
