Dana Owens, better known as Queen Latifah has broken barriers and dominated multiple industries for decades. Hip-Hop’s highness also has the accolades to prove it; earning an Oscar nomination for her role in 2002’s Chicago, a Grammy award for the song “U.N.I.T.Y.”, an Emmy and Golden Globe. She was also the youngest to receive the Marian Anderson award, for her work in the community.
Latifah currently supports 14 charities and 19 charitable causes but her latest good deed may literally be the biggest yet. The Queen plans to build a $14 million affordable housing complex in her hometown of Newark, NJ.
The blueprint is set for 20 three-family town-homes with 60 units priced at affordable market rates. In addition, there will be a three-story mixed use building, with 16 units that will be priced according to income.
The actress, through the BlueSugar Corporation, of which she serves as co-president, is developing the multifamily town-homes with GonSosa Development. The project’s plans also include a fitness center and 1,900 square feet of retail space that will be rented to nonprofits.
The complex is set to break ground in the summer. The 60 units will be done by December 2020 and the affordable housing building will be available by December 2021. All hail the Queen!
