Steph Curry Unites Women Through Sneakers and Scholarships

By Kyle Daniels
Several Months Ago Nine-year-old Riley Morrison wrote a letter to Warriors star Steph Curry. She asked why his signature Under Armour sneakers were only sold in boys sizes. Impressed that a nine-year-old girl had the courage to use her voice to call attention to an equality issue, Steph responded and quickly took action. He raised the matter to Under Armour and the online site properly listed the smaller sizes, intended for girls into the right section.
However, he didn’t just stop there. After Curry posted a hand written response, he also sent two pairs of sneakers to Riley. In the letter, he mentioned that something special was in the works for National Women’s Day. Little did Riley know, she’d later help design that special surprise.

She helped Curry create the UA ICON Curry 6 United We Win colorway. According to USA Today: “The company says the new shoes will be a blend of purple and deep orchid with white. In addition, they will come with a sock liner Riley helped design — with two girls playing basketball, surrounded by the words “Be Fearless,” “Girl Power,” “Be the Change,” “Girls Hoop Too” and “Rock the Currys.”
If dropping the sneakers on Internationals Women’s Day wasn’t special enough, sales of the new United We Win shoes will go toward a scholarship that Under Armour and The Stephen and Ayesha Curry Family Foundation created for college-bound female students in the Bay Area.
